“Picking up the Pieces” is an exhibit currently on display at the Historical Society of Cecil County, curated by Jeffrey Ricketts.

The exhibit covers the vast history of a house in northern Cecil County known as “Mullen’s Folly”. Mullen’s Folly was built around 1789 or possibly earlier.

From 1789-1823 the building served as a general store, dispensing all types of goods needed and wanted by the inhabitants of the village of Calvert.

The house is currently undergoing major restoration efforts to return the building to its late 18th century appearance. During restoration, Jeffrey Ricketts has uncovered over 8,000 artifacts telling the history of the site from about 1710-1990.

This exhibit is composed of many of these artifacts, but also of family relics of the Berriker-FitzGerald family who inhabited the structure from 1859-2022. This exhibit gives a glimpse into how even the smallest of pieces picked up tell an important story!
