The months of September and October are busy this year!
To start the month off historically, a Memorial Remembrance ceremony will be held for American Patriot Colonel Henry Hollingsworth, sponsored by the Colonel Henry Hollingsworth Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. This takes place at his gravesite in the Elkton Cemetery on Howard Street at noon. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony at the Historical Society of Cecil County (135 East Main Street).
Our research library will be open on Saturday September 7 from 10 am until 2 pm.
Also on September 7 is the Mount Harmon Colonial Festival. This takes place from 10 am until 4 pm. Mount Harmon Plantation is located at 600 Mount Harmon Road in Earleville, Maryland. Call 410-275-8819 or go to their website www.mountharmon.org for more information.
Another event is happening on September 7 at the Pencader Heritage Museum in nearby Newark, Delaware. There will be a ceremony commemorating the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge. The ceremony begins t 10 m, with a memorial service taking place at noon. This public event is free, including parking, demonstrations, programs and access to the museum. Registration (free ticket) is encouraged so they can better gauge how many will be attending.
On September 9, our own Mike Dixon will present “Tales the Tombstones Whisper” at the Corbit Calloway Memorial Library in Odessa, Delaware. This presentation is about the evolution graveyards and cemeteries, presented by local historian Mike Dixon. This takes place at 6:30 pm. No registration is required. Saturday, September 14 is a very busy day! It is the day of Elkton’s annual Fall Fest, and the day of the Cecil County Public Library’s Crab Crawl. Two Underground Railroad events are taking place on the same day. In Chesapeake City, there will be an Underground Railroad cruise on the C & D Canal. This is sponsored by Cecil County Tourism. Boarding begins at 10:45am, boat departs at 11am! This event takes place again on September 28!
Another Underground Railroad event also takes place on September 14 and 21 at Elk Neck State Park. It is called “In Their Footsteps: Pathway to Freedom” and begins at 6:45 each night. You must register for this event at 410-287-5333. The cost is $3. Please meet at the Turkey Point Lighthouse parking lot 15 minutes before the start of the program.
Cecil County will celebrate the 350th anniversary of the founding of the county on September 21 with fireworks in Chesapeake City. This event takes place in Pell Garden and begins at 3 pm. There will be music, food, and vendors. The historical society will be there with a table. The fireworks start at dusk.
The Cecil County Farm Museum and Regional Agricultural Center will be hosting a talk by Jeffrey Ricketts, who is a member of our Board of Trustees and the owner of Mullen’s Folly. He will be presenting at 10 am and will discuss his progress on his pre-1745 log house located in Cecil County, MD.
